1. When
and where was the first permanent English settlement made?
Jamestown, Chesapeake Bay, was the first permanent English
settlement in America, established by The London Company in 1607.
2. How did
slavery start in Virginia? What year did it start?
1619, the Dutch ship, The
White Lion, carrying twenty African slaves, landed in Virginia. The English
need workers (as they were too lazy to do it themselves), and the Dutch needed
supplies, so the Africans were traded to the English tobacco growers.
3. Who
founded Maryland?
George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, founded Maryland,
named in honour of King Charles I’s wife, Henrietta Maria.
4. Why was
Carolina divided into two colonies?
The people in the northern colony came mostly from
Pennsylvanian and New England while the people in the southern colony were made
up chiefly of English and French Protestants. The occupation of these two
groups differed. Farming, weaving and lace-making were occupations of the
north. Lumber, pitch and tar were their chief products. In general, small
working class farmers owned the land. In the south, however, planters owned
large estates and lived in comparative luxury. They delegated the care of their
estates to an overseer. He, in turn, depended on slave to do the work. Rice and
indigo dye were among the main products.
5. (9) Why was
Georgia founded?
Georgia was the last English colony to be settles. In 1732,
125 years after the founding of Jamestown, King George II gave the land between
the present-day Savannah River and Florida to James Oglethorpe. This grant of
land was intended to serve two purposes. First it was to be a buffer against
the Spanish Catholic in Florida. Second, it was to be a refuge for inmates of
the English debtor prison. Love Brid xox
