The Pennsylvania Dutch of today are descendants of German immigrants.

Farming was the chief occupation of the colonists. Fishing, shipbuilding and manufacturing were next in importance.

  1.  What were the four social classes in the South?
There were four social classes: the slave owners, whites who did not own slaves, the “poor Whites” and the slaves themselves.

  1. What were the three kinds of local government in the colonies?
There were three kinds of local government in the colonies. New England had the township system. In the South, there was a county system. The middle colonies had a system known as the township-county system.

The westward movement of the English deeply concerned the French and was the main reason for the French and Indian War, which began in 1754 and ended in 1763.

The most important event in the conversion of Mexico was the apparition of Our Lady, the Blessed Mother, at Guadalupe.

The most prominent names in the history of the Florida missions are Pedro Menendez de Aviles and Father Francisco Lopez.

The New English and Middle English Colonies are Established


  1. Why did the Pilgrims leave Holland and come to America?
The pilgrims moved to Holland when they could not find any religious freedom in England. However, when they saw their children acquiring Dutch customs, they became alarmed because they wanted them to remain English. For this reason, in 1620, they decided to leave Holland and go to America.

  1. What colonies were founded as a result of religious intolerance in Massachusetts?
People who desired to get away from the intolerance of the Massachusetts settlements founded Rhode Island and Connecticut.

  1.   Who is known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”?
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha is called the “Lily of the Mohawks”.

  1. Who founded Pennsylvania? To what religious group did he belong?
William Penn founded Pennsylvania, and he belonged to the Quakers, a religious sect who believe that all people are friends.

The Southern English Colonies are Established


1.      When and where was the first permanent English settlement made?
Jamestown, Chesapeake Bay, was the first permanent English settlement in America, established by The London Company in 1607.

2.      How did slavery start in Virginia? What year did it start?
1619, the Dutch ship, The White Lion, carrying twenty African slaves, landed in Virginia. The English need workers (as they were too lazy to do it themselves), and the Dutch needed supplies, so the Africans were traded to the English tobacco growers.

3.      Who founded Maryland?
George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, founded Maryland, named in honour of King Charles I’s wife, Henrietta Maria.

4.      Why was Carolina divided into two colonies?
The people in the northern colony came mostly from Pennsylvanian and New England while the people in the southern colony were made up chiefly of English and French Protestants. The occupation of these two groups differed. Farming, weaving and lace-making were occupations of the north. Lumber, pitch and tar were their chief products. In general, small working class farmers owned the land. In the south, however, planters owned large estates and lived in comparative luxury. They delegated the care of their estates to an overseer. He, in turn, depended on slave to do the work. Rice and indigo dye were among the main products.

5.     (9) Why was Georgia founded?
Georgia was the last English colony to be settles. In 1732, 125 years after the founding of Jamestown, King George II gave the land between the present-day Savannah River and Florida to James Oglethorpe. This grant of land was intended to serve two purposes. First it was to be a buffer against the Spanish Catholic in Florida. Second, it was to be a refuge for inmates of the English debtor prison.

1.   Who was the conqueror of the Aztec empire?
Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortez, was the conquerors of the Aztec empire.

 2.  Give two examples of the Satanic nature of the Aztec empire.
None of the primitive societies practiced them on the scale of the Aztecs in Mexico. The total number of humans killed was at least 50,000 per year. The Aztecs had two main “gods”. One was known as the Lover of Hearts and the Drinker of Blood. The other was known as the Lord of the Dark. Nowhere else in history has Satan so institutionalized and formalized his worship than in the Aztec empire.

3. Who was the conqueror of the Inca Empire?
Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire by seizing the Inca emperor Atahualpa, murdering him and slaughtering thousands of unarmed Incas.

4. Who is called the “Father of New France”?

Samuel de Champlain is called the Father of New France (Canada).

5. Who were England’s first explorers in the New World?
The first English explorers were John Cabot and his son, while later explorers, such as Marin Frobisher, William Baffin and John Davis, were pirates.

1.    What was the purpose of the Crusades?
The purpose of the Crusades was to take back the Holy Land from the Turks (the Muslims).
2.    What early inventions were particularly helpful to sailors?
The Crusades created a new interest in geography and travel; therefore the compass and astrolabe were invented.
3.    Which European country was the first to find an all-water route to the East?
Portugal was the first country to find an all-water route to the East.
4.    What date did Columbus discover America? Where did he land?
Christopher Columbus landed at San Salvador in the early morning of October 12th, 1492.
