The People of the Colonies


  1.  From what country in Europe did the Pennsylvania Dutch come?
The Pennsylvania Dutch of today are descendants of German immigrants.

  1.  What were the four most important occupations of the colonists?
Farming was the chief occupation of the colonists. Fishing, shipbuilding and manufacturing were next in importance.

  1.  What were the four social classes in the South?
There were four social classes: the slave owners, whites who did not own slaves, the “poor Whites” and the slaves themselves.

  1. What were the three kinds of local government in the colonies?
There were three kinds of local government in the colonies. New England had the township system. In the South, there was a county system. The middle colonies had a system known as the township-county system.
